Amman

This charming city captures your heart. There is a swanky new part of town with posh hotels, broad streets and supermarkets. But I’d recommend spending a day or two in the old town, with its crowds, local markets and narrow streets. The people here are so warm and friendly, that you don’t feel like a stranger. One should definitely try the famous Hashem’s with its street food. Pretty much everyone we asked regarding good authentic food pointed us here. It’s a humble establishment, plastic tables and chairs laid out on the street, hummus and pita bread, but the atmosphere was amazing. You see families out for the evening, locals, tourists, all sitting and enjoying great food, in a relaxed setting. That’s really an experience to relish.

From here, one can do a day trip to Jerash, with its well preserved Roman ruins, especially the long column of pillars. A word of caution to the weary though – don’t attempt it in summer or the hot season, as it’s a long long walk. Very picturesque and scenic, but best to do in cool weather.
