Jordan: The Hashemite Kingdom

There’s something about the Middle East that conjures romantic imagery into people’s minds. Might be a Bedouin on a camel, riding towards an oasis. Or date palms in the desert, or exotic souks, belly dancers, dervishes and Tuaregs. Sadly, in recent times, it’s often been replaced by violent men waving AK-47’s as they battle for territory and ideology, causing havoc and destruction across vast swathes of land. In the midst of all this, the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan is a hidden gem in the heart of the Middle East. Unlike the rich Gulf States or Saudi Arabia, it has little oil. Hence it’s had to develop on the entrepreneurial skills of its populace. It has a well-educated, liberal minded people, is a constitutional monarchy, with a well-loved ruler, and at the forefront of human rights, freedom of religion and speech and women’s equality in the region. It is one of the few Arab states to have made lasting peace with Israel, and under a strong king, has ensured that terrorists cannot operate with impunity within the country. It is a safe country, warm and friendly people, and with a rich historical and cultural heritage, well worth visiting.
